The Liberia Petroleum Regulatory Authority (LPRA) has committed US$48,390 to help upgrade the University of Liberia’s Earth Sciences Laboratory under a memorandum of understanding signed by the two institutions.
The agreement was signed on October 21, 2026, by UL President Dr. Layli Maparyan and LPRA Director General Madam Marilyn Logan at LPRA’s offices on 18th Street in Sinkor. It aims to link graduates from the College of Engineering, particularly Earth Sciences students, with workforce development and employment opportunities.
Dr. Maparyan said students consistently ask for more practical experience. “Practical experience starts in the lab, and then it moves from there to internships and practicum and job experiences,” she said.
Madam Logan said a modern laboratory will help students move beyond classroom theory and gain experience with the tools and technologies used in petroleum and geosciences industries. The investment covers refurbishment, equipment and related materials, including computers, projectors, air conditioners, digital petrographic microscopes, geological compasses, chairs, rock and mineral collection sets, electrical accessories and batteries.
Logan said the investment supports quality education, practical competence and Liberia’s future technical workforce. She described the partnership as part of LPRA’s mission to ensure Liberia’s natural resources create opportunities for Liberians.
